MARKET CHARTER CELEBRATES 700 YEAR MILESTONE

Keighley Town Council in association with Bradford Markets Division hosted a three day continental market in the town centre to celebrate seven hundred years of continual trading. A number of local traders left their shops and took a stall  amongst the continental traders.  Members of the Town Council (right) dressed in Medieval costume and Morris dancers from Leeds and Oakworth danced in the town centre.  Charlie, the Fire Eater, marvelled the crowd as he literally played with fire and street band, Flashco, entertained the crowd with their very unusual type of Morris dancing.  The children’s funfair which was held on the Medieval Market site next to the Keighley Shared Church provided entertainment for the younger members of the community.

Town Mayor, Councillor Tony Wright, pulled the first pint of the specially brewed Charter Ale at the Brown Cow in Westgate

 Westgate

The Royal British Legion and the Veterans were joined on Remembrance Sunday by a host of organisations to remember those people who made the ultimate sacrifice and never returned home.  It was an opportunity for the large number of people attending the service in Town Hall Square and other parts of the area to reflect on the legacy.  This year the Keighley Mace was carried by the new Mayor’s Attendant/Mace Bearer, Barry Taylor, Proprietor of the Brown Cow Public House in Keighley and former member of the 4/7 Royal Dragoon Guards.  The parade led by Civic Heads made its way to the Shared Church for the Remembrance Service. Mary Lister, the British Legion Schools Liaison Officer, organised local schools to join the soldiers and uniformed groups to lay their own wreaths. Children at Lees Primary School were given a lesson in history (right).

Thanks to the Keighley News for the photograph.

Keighley Town Council funded the first hand-held laser speed camera in West Yorkshire to enable Keighley Police Division to develop Community Speed Watch, a project which has now gone “county-wide” and which has received a Prince Michael Road Safety Certificate.  Roadsafe Director, Adrian Walsh, handed over the Certificate to Keighley Police Division’s Speed Watch Team at the West Yorkshire Police HQ.  On 6 December Deputy Mayor Councillor Graham Mitchell and police representatives will attend an Awards Luncheon Ceremony at the Savoy Hotel where they hope to receive the principal National Award for Keighley’s enterprising work within road safety.

Montauk Island was just one of the bands that kept the audience entertained in Victoria Hall for the Rock Concert on 29 October. Excellent performances from Montauk Island, Soul Transplant, Angel Chain Diaries, Brand New Analogues, Arkaye and The Skeletal Family were fully supported by the DJ Mr Ray Bell.  A quiz in the bar and the raffling of several quality prizes highlighted an evening enjoyed by all who attended.

We hope that it will be possible to hold more rock concerts for local young bands and local people in the future. The Town Council would like to thank Mr Allan Clarke for organising the pie and pea supper and Jenny and Peter who assisted.  Special thanks to be given to the Russell Street Project for their involvement in our events throughout the year and to the Musicians Centre for their invaluable help with the whole project.

COME ON CANAL YOU DO IT?

The second sponsored walk to raise money for the Mayor’s charities Multiple Sclerosis (Keighley branch) and Keighley Sea Cadets was held on 19 November.  The walkers set off from Bar Lane, Riddlesden and walked the canal route to the Fisherman’s Public House at Bingley.  On hand were Army Cadets who offered first aid and water and a number of Sea Cadets took part in what proved to be yet another successful and enjoyable Saturday.  Our picture shows the Army Cadets, Sea Cadets, Councillors and staff.  The third walk will take place in February—date to be confirmed.  Any individuals or organisations who wish to take part should contact the Town Council office on 618252.

A Steering Group has been set up under the auspices of Oakworth Urban Village to consider community possibilities for redevelopment of the site. The group includes representatives of Airedale Primary Care Trust, SportKeighley, Worth Valley Young Farmers, Keighley Area Committee and Keighley Town Council and is looking to provide sports, conference and arts facilities in some of the buildings on the site. It will be used by the Worth Valley community; indeed many groups have been using the gymnasiums and the grounds since the school closed some years ago.

It has been suggested that the Asset Management Section of Bradford District Council may wish to pull down the school premises and to sell the land for development. However, no consultation with the many groups involved including the Town Council and the Area Committee has yet taken place. The town has already lost community facilities at Central Hall and to lose the Bronte School Site and all the potential which that site has to offer would be yet another blow to Keighley and the people of the Worth Valley.
