Society of Local Council Clerks (West Yorkshire)

The Society of Local Council Clerks is the professional body for local council clerks.  Its membership is steadily growing and now represents over 4,000 councils in England and Wales.  Many councils realise the benefits of having a clerk that is properly trained, fully briefed on the issues of the day and can get fast accurate advice to problems that they may face.  In fact, over 85% of members' councils willingly pay for their clerks' subscriptions to the Society.  The Society of Local Council Clerks is developing fast and is increasingly recognised as the body which represents and promotes "best practice" in the sector.  The strength of the society is in the numerous opportunities that provides the clerks to meet, this can be at regular county branch meetings, regional conferences or the national conference held in October where concerns and issues can be shared with fellow clerks.

The West Yorkshire branch was re-formed in the mid-90's.  It meets twice a year and runs a training event once a year.  Those who have attended regularly have benefitted from networking - meeting clerks from difference sized parishes but all with similar problems.  From its small beginnings the branch has seen great strides made within the society and in particular with the training that is provided nationally and the advisory service to members. Clerks who are members of the society have found the membership to be invaluable.

Training

From there being no training at all up to a few years ago, there is now the "Working with Your Council" Course which has been designed to kick start the career of new clerks, the CiLCA Qualification which is required by Councils which aim to go forward to gain Quality Council Status and advanced courses at the University of Gloucester for those clerks who wish to take their training further.

"The Clerk"

This is a regular magazine specially produced for the society's members that covers technical issues in depth, news and stories from around the country, full contact details of regional and national officers and useful supply information.
